Fantastic Sams acquires 93 salons in Minnesota

Regis Corp., take note. Another national hair salon chain is expanding in the Midwest and is looking to do so out of Minnesota.

Fantastic Sams Hair Salons, based in Beverly, Mass., recently reacquired the franchise rights to 93 salons in Minnesota, one of its largest and most successful markets, for an undisclosed sum. In addition, the privately held company hired Tom Boitz, who previously owned the Minnesota franchise territory, as vice president of the Midwest region based in Maple Grove, where he will oversee Fantastic Sams' expansion into cities like Chicago and Cleveland.

"I'm geared up for growth," Boitz said.

Pink balloons lined the ceiling where paper lanterns of the same color were also strewn. This all matched the pink aprons that were worn by two stylists and the like-colored T-shirt donned by Kevin McCrory, the owner of Forest Park's Fantastic Sams hair salon, 7235 Madison St.

Last week, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Fantastic Sams offered $10, discounted haircuts. Half the proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation's Cause for the Cure, which is billed as a nationwide fundraiser aimed at raising breast cancer awareness and supporting research for a cure.

"Everyone has been touched by cancer," said McCrory, a former CPA who bought the Forest Park location of the Fantastic Sams chain in March 2010.

For one stylist, Laura Rayo, the promotion hit close to home: her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago, while living in Arizona.

"We were crushed, the cancer caught us off guard - we were in denial. It was so scary," Rayo said.

Franchisee Profile: Frank Zito of Smyrna, GA

Frank Zito recently opened his third Fantastic Sams, a full-service hair care salon, in Smyrna, GA. After working with the same company for 30 years, Zito decided that he wanted to do something different and apply his management background in a business of his own. With three successful salons, he continues to uphold a family-oriented business with impeccable customer-client relationships and a broad range of services.

Q: What was your career before franchising?
A: I worked in management for almost 30 years. I had actually been with the same company since I graduated college and I’m a chemical engineer by training.
Q: How did you learn about Fantastic Sams?
A: My wife, Tania, and I were looking into different franchises like food, landscaping and beauty services. Women’s health and beauty stood out to us because it seems to be pretty recession resistant. No industry is recession proof but women are still going to the salon. We liked that Fantastic Sams was a full service salon and more than just hair care, focusing on cuts, color, waxing and more.

Q: Why did you decide to open your own business?
A: I wanted to do something different. I had worked for the same company for 30 years and liked the idea of working and managing my own business. Our Smyrna, GA Fantastic Sams is actually our third salon location with them. We bought one that was in distress in Hoover, AL and turned it around and another in Douglasville, GA that was for sale. We decided to open a Fantastic Sams in Smyrna because we really liked the location and community; there is a lot of opportunity for growth in that area.

Q: What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
A: We liked that Fantastic Sams already had a blueprint laid out for success. They have been great about training the staff and not all independent salons offer that. The corporate offices are very helpful in answering any questions that we have too. It’s a very structured environment and that helps our business run smoothly.

Q: With regard to your previous experience, what skills do you feel helped you in your business?
A: I’ve been in management for most of my career, so I think that has come in very helpful as a business owner. We retain our work force and maintain consistency. I give people motivation to work for a common goal and work efficiently. I also realize the importance of keeping everyone trained. From my experience in management, I know that it’s important to always have a plan. My wife and I work well together because we both bring different skills and background to the table. She is the operations manager and creates the culture in our businesses whereas I do more of the back end work, such as advertising and accounting.

Q: What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today with your business?
A: Competing with other salons is a challenge that we face just like any other business. It can also be challenging to find a strong staff, but taking the time is worth it because it makes us a more successful salon in the end.

Q: What makes your business different?
A: Our customer service makes us different from other salons. We are a very family-oriented workplace and customers can see that in the way that we interact with them and among ourselves. We also offer more services than our competitors; we do a lot more than highlights and haircuts.

Leading the expansion is Bob Loffredo, who will spearhead the brand’s growth and act as a local support team for business owners in the market. Salon locations, which will be franchised, have not yet been specified. However, Loffredo said that the Burlington area would likely see the company's first developments.

Faced with a gloomy economic climate; dried up lead pool; and financing issues, many businesses have been forced to regress. However, for those brands well-positioned in recession-resistant segments, the economy has meant anything but regression, more towards opportunity. The IFA’s Women’s Franchising Network is a system of local chapters that are designed to develop relationships with women franchising professionals and to address issues, share ideas and offer solutions related to franchising. The first chapter was launched in May, 2002 in Denver and now includes the following markets: Chicago, Denver, San Diego, the Twin Cities, Southern California, New York/New Jersey, Washington, DC/Baltimore, Seattle, Toronto, Miami, Connecticut, Richmond, Boston and Dallas. These events have different speakers and industry professionals to learn from each other and increase ones knowledge about the franchising industry.

Fantastic Sams CEO tours South Sound for future sites

Fantastic Sams Hair Salons is eyeing the South Sound and sent its president and CEO, Scott Colabuono, to scout out potential salon sites.

"When the rain stops and the sun comes out it's one of the more beautiful places in the country," said Colabuono, who has been in the area since Thursday and leaves tomorrow. "Most of this is to visit locations and see where we should be targeting the opening ... We'd love to get a great operator here for Pierce and King counties."

Fantastic Sams wants one franchisee for seven locations in Pierce and King counties. Once the deal is finalized, Colabuono said it should take about six months until the first Fantastic Sams would appear and then another would open every 12 to 18 months. To entice an operator the company has cut its licensing fee in half to $50,000 for the seven locations.

The seven locations will employ about 100 stylists and staff members. However, the new franchisee is not required to have any background in the salon industry because Fantastic Sams has trainers lined up to teach the technical side of the business.

Get Your Glam On! How to Get the Hottest Oscar Hairstyles

Hailee Steinfeld wore a very age appropriate hairstyle that is sure to be a popular request during prom and wedding season.
After blow drying the hair smooth, pull all the hair back into a smooth pony tail and secure high at the back crown area. Separate the pony tail into 5 or 6 smaller sections. Take each individual section and create large barrel curls by rolling the hair towards the base of the pony tail. Strategically place each barrel curl at the back of the head with hair pins or bobby pins. Spray lightly with fantasticfinish™ finishing spray. Create a deep side part and lightly backcomb to create a high sweep in the front on both sides and the back crown area. Blow-dry the hair for a smooth look. Leave out some hair at the front temple area to curl later for face framing tendrils. Brush the hair back into a low ponytail. Shorter side layers can be pinned back with jeweled hair pins or a head band. Get a firm grip around the base of the ponytail and use your other hand to twist the tail into a tight spiral. Hold the base of the ponytail with one hand, and then lift the tail straight up with the other. Begin to coil it clockwise around the base. When you've made half of a circle, release the hand holding the base and use it to hold the forming bun as you continue to coil the tail of the chignon. Complete one rotation, and then tuck the end of the tail under the chignon. Secure the chignon using a few prong-shaped bobby pins. Push one pin through at any outside edge, collecting a small amount of the bun as you make the insertion. Secure the opposite side with a second pin. Take a 1 inch curling iron and spiral curl the tendrils to create a softer, face framing look.

Take a large barrel curling iron, at least 2 inches in diameter, and beginning at the bottom of each section, begin to create Marcel waves. Marcel waves are designed by alternating the curling iron to create an S shape within the hair section. After waving, let the hair cool down for a few minutes to set the waves. Take a large paddle brush and gently brush the hair to soften and mold the waves in place. Take the opposite side of the sweeping side part and tuck behind the ear for a more elegant look. Spray lightly with fantasticfinish™ finishing spritz.

What excites you the most about this new position?
I am most enthused to strengthen and grow our overall educational and training departments to increase the information and expertise we are providing to franchisees and stylists. I am specifically looking forward to broadening our multi-cultural division, where we will be able to offer a customized service for each of our guests. Working on all aspects of the multi-cultural needs, we want to create a need and let our guests understand the new offerings we have: cut, relaxers, color. We are seeing a movement toward naturally curly hair industry-wide and we are able to offer cuts, relaxers and colors to support this new trend. We have about 40 educators that work in different regions and we will certify our educators and take this information to the regional and salon levels. I am also looking forward to working more closely with TIGI to grow the color business at Fantastic Sams. We do a lot of webinar training so that we can reach more constituents faster. As Senior Director, I will be looking at bringing new services to Fantastic Sams to expand better serve our clientele.

How has your experience at Fantastic Sams prepared you for this new position?
I have been involved in hair education for the past 20 years, which has given me the opportunity to work with stylist of all different ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds. From these experiences, I am able to provide my knowledge to the stylists and owners across the Fantastic Sams system. We are also developing master stylist programs which will be geared towards helping stylists become the best of the best. Any licensed stylist in the Fantastic Sams system will be able to participate in this program.

With 35 years in the hair care industry, what are the most important aspects to consider in the hair care industry/training?
At Fantastic Sams, we do a tremendous amount of face-to-face, hands-on training when launching new trends or products. This personal training helps familiarize our stylists with new products and techniques and strengthens their skills tremendously. It also allows them to ask questions and learn from doing rather than simply observe a lesson. As educators, we have to hone our own skills and constantly be learning and improving to become better teachers. I continue to explore training opportunities and programs to improve my own techniques. Additionally, at Fantastic Sams we are always staying current and on top of the newest trends, so we can fully understand the craft.

What are the hottest winter hair trends?
Across the industry, we are seeing longer hair styled messy and sexy with a lot of waves. Additionally, the hair is being parted directly down the center or deep side parts. For the shorter looks, we are seeing the classic bob but a little longer with a full fringe. Pixie cuts are also making a come-back as seen on celebrities such as Emma Watson and Carey Mulligan. Short layered cuts are being done with razors. On the color side we are seeing a variety of very rich brunettes, with highlights right around the face. There’s a focus on natural, golden highlights. We are also seeing red in different degrees for girls who want to be noticed. For styles, we are seeing the side ponytail increasing in popularity and a lot of volume on the top of the hair. If women are choosing to wear their hair curly, it will be fuller at the perimeter.

What are some of the biggest trends occurring in the Fantastic Sams system?
At Fantastic Sams, we pride ourselves in providing continuous education to our stylists. We do this through a diverse means, such as webinar training and social media networking. In the last year, we have utilized advanced technology to implement our programs to our educators and stylists. We find that this innovative delivery improves the efficiency in which our programs are delivered. It has also established a stronger sense of community within our franchise system.
Color is key and Fantastic Sams is working closely with TIGI to widen our scope of color offerings. In addition to developing programs that improve a stylists’ skill set, we have created education paths which increase retention. The Master Colorist Program is a certification process that establishes our stylists as color experts. We are seeing an increased interest from our male guests in coloring, either in grey blending from mature customers or highlights among younger men. Another increasingly popular technique is Balayage color trends, which is where we hand paint the design into the hair to provide a soft and natural effect. No matter what trends lie ahead, at Fantastic Sams we look forward to embracing the diverse industry changes.

Eight salons planned for area

Fantastic Sams is trying to cut its way into Fairfield County and grow its share of a $60 billion industry.

The Boston-based affordable hair salon franchise with almost 1,300 venues nationwide plans to develop eight salons in the Stamford area as part of its goal to open more than 50 locations a year in the United States. The company's only current Connecticut salon is in Groton.

"While many brands protected their spending in 2009, we continued to market, spend and grow our brand," Scott Colabuono, Fantastic Sams' chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Even during this down-turned economy, there is opportunity."

Colabuono said revenue at many Fantastic Sams franchises increased 10 percent over the past year.

Fantastic Sams, which was founded in 1974 in Memphis, Tenn., by hairstylist Sam Ross, opened 54 locations last year, and is on schedule to open more than 50 more venues by the end of this year, the company said.

Fantastic Sams offers development agreements involving three, five or 10 full-service hair salons to prospective franchisees, which must have a minimum of $60,000 in liquid assets and a net worth of at least $250,000. Franchise costs, which include training, equipment fees and initial advertising, range from $115,000 to $228,600.

National hair salon chain Fantastic Sams intends to move into the Knoxville market with plans to establish eight franchise locations.

The company is in talks with some candidates now and is looking for others who want to establish a salon, said Scott Colabuono, president and CEO of Fantastic Sams. Colabuono said no salon locations have been picked yet.

"We don't look at locations until the prospect is very near closing and is licensed to operate," he said.

Fantastic Sams, which began when founder Sam Ross opened his first salon in Memphis in 1974, has about 1,300 salons across North America and 29 in Tennessee. The company now wants to establish itself in Knoxville, and Colabuono said it will work with each franchise owner to develop a salon with eight chairs that employs up to 12 people.

Salon chain Fantastic Sams grows in Northeast

National full-service hair salon Fantastic Sams is planning to extend its reach in the Northeast
with five stores in the York, Pa. area and several locations in the Hartford, Conn. area within the next few years, according to the York Daily Record.

The chain is in discussions with some prospective franchisees in York at this point, but doesn’t
have a specific timetable for opening these stores yet, Chief Executive Officer Scott Colabuono
told the publication.

He did say that Fantastic Sams would like to develop a presence in South Central Pennsylvania
and York is a good place to start because of its proximity to Lancaster, Dauphin and Adams
counties.

Franchisees currently operate locations in other areas of the state, such as Pittsburgh,
Wyomissing and Doylestown, Pa.

The Hartford Business Journal reported late last month that the salon plans to open 10 new
units within the capital during the next three to five years, with as many as 50 statewide over thenext decade.

With nearly 1,300 salons across the country, including about 225 in California, Beverly, Mass.-
based Fantatic Sams is one of the nation’s largest full-service salons. Each location provides
services for men, women and children, such as haircuts, straightening, coloring, facial waxing
and mustache trims.

Speaking with DailyVista, Colabuono said that Fantastic Sams plans to add new franchises
nationwide since a demographic and psychographic study showed that the salon chain could
grow to about 4,000 locations without saturating the market.

He said Connecticut is a great opportunity in both its rural and coastal cities, while Hartford is receiving particular focus because its regional director lives in nearby Rhode Island.

“In South Central Pennsylvania, around Harrisburg, there are about one million people and little
competition from chain salons,” Colabuono added. “We also want to add several salons in the
Philadelphia area and then branch west from there.”

Fantastic Sams conducts its nationwide and local marketing through a franchisee funded
national advertising fund that supports a company approved advertising calendar every year.

Through this calendar, the salon plans various promotions for services like haircuts, hair color
and waxing, while developing corresponding collateral that is shipped to sites six to eight times per year.

“Eighty to 85 percent of the funds they contribute go back to ads in local markets,” Colabuono
stated. “Fifteen percent goes towards the online ad generator where they can log in and actually
create their own ads from preapproved materials.”

These promotions are designed to appeal to both men and women as Fantastic Sams is one of
the first unisex salons. More specifically, the company’s customers tend to skew 55 to 60
percent women; 30 to 40 percent men and 10 percent children, Colabuono continued.

In more heavily saturated markets like Southern California the salon will conduct radio, print and television advertising because of their reach, but in regions with a smaller number of locations, Fantastic Sams relies more on direct mail, billboards, flyers and any other initiatives that can produce results.

Colabuono added that the salon has also used social media for the past year to reach
customers and potential franchisees.

“On the consumer side, we have a Facebook page, blogs and then we have bloggers that follow
our company,” he said. “They run promotions and product giveaways. We also do social media
on the franchise sales side with LinkedIn and a blog for franchise sales press.”

The company has developed ways to utilize e-mail and mobile to stay in touch with its customers. Colabuono said Fantastic Sams’ mobile application works especially well for alerting
visitors when a stylist is available because the salon doesn’t take appointments.

Our source continued that an e-mail-based reminder program will roll out in the next month or
so, allowing consumers to customize when they want to be prompted to visit the salon.

The national advertising fund works with a public relations agency and an agency of record that
creates its collateral material.

“At the local level franchisees can either use the national advertising fund agencies or go out
and recruit their own agency from their own market,” Colabuono said.

He added that partnerships at the local and national level play a major role in Fantastic Sams
marketing strategy. At the community level, franchisees get involved with charities and school
boards to develop donation programs.

“At the national advertising fund we just had a partnership promotion with (online clothing
retailer) Spiegel where we did a makeover for women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s,” our
source added. “We’ll roll out this promotion once everything is finished in our advertising, public relations and so forth. We’re always on the look-out for partnerships. We’ve done some things in the past with Disney and other groups like breast cancer walks and pony tail cuts for cancer victims.”

A professional full-service hair care franchisor is eager to add a little style to the Greater Hartford area by opening 10 new units in the region over the next three to five years and as many as 50 across the state in the next decade.

Despite a gloomy economy and strict lending standards, executives at the Beverly, Mass.-based 1,300-unit chain say there is a demand for new Fantastic Sams Hair Salons.

“While many brands protected their spending in 2009, we continued to market, spend and grow our brand,” said Scott Colabuono, CEO of Fantastic Sams. “Even during this down-turned economy, there is opportunity.”

The demand for affordable in-salon services combined with the company’s investment model and owner support system continue to drive franchise inquiries, according to Colabuono.

“It was proven last year that our business model was recession resistant, in fact, many of our salon owners experienced revenue increases of up to 10 percent,” said Colabuono. (Read More).

Two Fantastic Sams locations have a new franchise owner.

Joe Overton, an ordained minister who worked in commercial real estate before moving here from Chicago with his wife and two teenage daughters two years ago purchased a Sams location at 2810 Coors NW Suite E in December and added another location at 4411 Montaño NW in July.

Overton said he'd like to open another location in the Northeast Heights or Rio Rancho by the end of the year.

Fantastic Sams is a national chain of about 1,300 walk-in, full-service hair salons for men, women and children. Albuquerque has another Fantastic Sams location at 300 Menaul NW owned by another franchisee and a location in Carlsbad. (Read More)

Sam Ross may have passed, but his spirit lives on throughout Fantastic Sams

The Fantastic Sams Family is saddened to announce the passing of Sam Ross, founder and long-time owner of Fantastic Sams.

Sam was a people person—he wanted all his people to take pride in themselves as individuals. Through his efforts, he helped to ensure that every customer of Fantastic Sams received quality hair service at affordable prices across the nation. His commitment to the system remains largely responsible for where the organization stands today.

Born a businessman, Sam started off buying and selling a deli in his early years before beginning a successful real estate company. After attending barber college in Memphis, Sam began working in a local barbershop. It wasn’t long before he bought out the location in 1974, converting it into what would become the first Fantastic Sam’s location. Two years later, Sam began franchising his salon concept.

Today there are nearly 1300 locations nationwide, making Fantastic Sams one of the world’s largest full-service hair care franchises. Without the presence of a man like Ross, this simply would not be possible. His commitment to teamwork at the salon, region and national levels along with continuous education to maintain the rigorous standards of excellence in guest services has allowed Fantastic Sams to thrive.

Outside his work, Sam will be remembered for being a warm, fun man. Though he and his wife, Beverly, never had children, they acted as “adoptive” parents for a group of international students from Mexico who did not travel home for American Holidays. The couple opened their homes and hearts to the students, joining in conversation around the dinner table. Many became lifelong friends, whose weddings and graduations Sam and Beverly lovingly attended.

With Sam, the Fantastic Sams family lost not only its founder but also a father figure. But he left behind a legacy of hair care that will continue on far into the future.

A shrewd businessman and benefactor of the arts, Sam Ross founded the international hair-salon franchise Fantastic Sam's in Memphis more than 35 years ago.

Mr. Ross died Monday of pneumonia at Ave Maria Home in Memphis. He was 81.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Ross was orphaned at age 10, losing both parents to a car accident, and lived with his grandfather. He joined the Navy at 17, and after his discharge, he and a military friend opened a deli in Boston. After only three months, they sold the business, in which they had invested $30,000, for $200,000.

Success became the hallmark of Ross' business ventures.

After selling the deli, he began a real estate business. He met his wife, Beverly, while on business in Chicago and in 1970 they moved to Memphis, where Ross decided to attend barber college.

Employed at a local barber shop, he achieved success as a kid-friendly barber, bought the shop from his boss and founded the first Fantastic Sam's in 1973. There are over 1,200 Fantastic Sam's hair salons in the U.S. and Canada today. Ross sold the hair salon franchise in 1990.

Of his success, Ross told The Commercial Appeal in 2004: "The fickle finger of God has always pointed me in the right direction." (Read More)

LAWRENCE - Fantastic Sams hair salon owner and master franchisee Boynton Weekes does not style or cut hair, and will not tell you the newest hair trends, but he knows hair. The industry, that is.

Weekes, a former insurance executive for a large insurer, is putting his good business sense, rather than his hair-styling ability, to good use and it is giving him an edge in an industry where usually only hair-care professionals thrive.

When Boynton Weekes started his career in insurance in the late '80s, in the back of his mind he dreamt he would one day own his own business.

He saw his dream come true in 2001, when he became the master franchisee for the Northeast Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey region for hair salon chain Fantastic Sams, which boasts about 1,300 salons in North America.

Weekes, along with longtime friend and business partner George Jackson, oversees 17 salons in the region and three more salons are scheduled to open this year. His own salon, Fantastic Sams Lawrenceville, has been a top earner in the chain for the past two years.

"Out of the 17 franchise units and out of 1,350 units in the company, five of the 17 are in the top 100 in terms of revenue," Weekes said. "We are very high performance salons here in New Jersey." (Read More)

The Avon Walk Chicago, the fourth of nine Avon Walks this year, attracted more than 3,400 participants from 45 states, Washington, D.C., and Denmark, including 307 breast cancer survivors, who joined together to raise lifesaving funds and awareness for breast cancer.

Over two days, Fantastic Sams franchisees and employees, journeyed 39 miles with thousands of other participants helping to forever alter the lives of thousands affected by breast cancer worldwide. Whether through informing individuals about our company, or entering the conversation regarding our brand, social media allows us to become actively engaged in ways previously not possible.

Just look at the recent example of Heather, the author of the blog Welch Happenings. Over the past two years, salons like Fantastic Sams did not fit into her budget, leaving Heather no choice but to cut her own hair. Recently, however, Heather did not have to partake in her customary self-trimming tradition. She celebrated part of her birthday this past week at her local Fantastic Sams, raving about her experience as she wrote, “Then [my husband] dropped me off at the Fantastic Sams for a haircut! First time I have had it cut by someone other than me in over two years. LOVED IT!!”

As in the case of Heather and many others across the nation, Fantastic Sams continues to bring large amounts of happiness through the smallest of actions. Although this is one small example of how social media can make an impact on the positive buzz of our brand, it serves as a great instance showing how the average customer can now make statements about the brand across the internet. Lack of hair styling experience didn't keep Marilyn Tokatly from opening five salons

Marilyn Tokatly, 56, didn't have hairstyling experience before she opened her first Fantastic Sams franchise a decade ago. Nonetheless, Tokatly's Corona store was one of the five highest earning Fantastic Sams locations nationwide.

Tokatly worked as a corporate recruiter in Los Angeles, then as a sales manager for Jenny Craig. She said both experiences have helped her manage her five Fantastic Sams stores. She recently opened a store off De Palma Road in Corona and has a license to open a sixth. Tokatly has become a model franchise owner for the hair salon chain, said Jennifer Metzger, regional director for Fantastic Sams.

As a franchise owner, Tokatly has bought a license good for 10 years to own and operate each store. She pays Fantastic Sams a flat fee each week.

Q: How did you get started?

A: At the time I had a very young daughter. She was in second grade, and I was working in a sales management job which was requiring a lot of my time so she was in day care a lot. So I went to a company called the Entrepreneur Source, and they kind of match you up with your background and what you're interested in and they actually presented the salon idea to me ... I still work as many hours, but it's flexible.

... Fantastic Sams is another well-established franchise network. It operates 25 salons in the San Antonio area. Those franchises were set up by the Massachusetts-based company, which charges $25,000 to $30,000 for its franchise fee, depending on the location.

Scott Colabuono, CEO and president of Fantastic Sams Hair International, says the company hooks up well-vetted applicants with third-party lenders, but he doubts discounts make a difference in attracting interest. “If someone is considering going into a franchise (relationship), do you really think that an incentive of $5,000 (20 percent fee reduction) is going to make a difference?” he says. “Nobody makes a lifestyle change because of a discount.”
That said, he admits one of the company’s developers, which signs up franchises outside of the company’s own six regions, is discounting the franchise fee for the Denver region.

“In the Denver market, they’re running a discount to see if it brings in any new business,” he says. The franchise fee for that area is currently $20,000. “We’re watching Denver closely to see if it does have an effect.”...

Overall, hair-care franchisors are confident about what’s to come. “The future is bright. The industry has confirmed it is recession-resistant,” says Colabuono. “For entrepreneurs with capital available or with favorable credit histories, now is the time to enter the field as real estate and stylists are abundantly available. Any effort the government and the SBA takes to improve access to lending is good for the franchise industry. While this short term measure helps thru February, a longer term solution to encourage banks to lend to qualified individuals is needed.

Stimulus Relief Extended for SBA Loans

The Senate voted this weekend to temporarily extend funding for two popular stimulus provisions that reduced fees and boosted guarantees on Small Business Administration-guaranteed loans.

The provisions, which helped bolster small-business lending over the past year, had run out of funding in late November. With the new extension, included in the Defense Appropriations bill, the government's maximum guarantee on SBA loans is restored to 90%, compared to pre-stimulus levels of 75%. Fees that the agency normally changes banks are also waived.

Carol Lux always has been intrigued with hair. “My mother thought I’d go into hairdressing, as I was constantly messing with my hair,” says Lux, a Woodbury resident. “On camping trips, I’d bring my rollers, hairspray and the latest hairdressing book; one time I came with my hair in a beehive.”

So, after a 39-year career at 3M, Lux decided to pursue her passion by becoming a Fantastic Sam’s franchisee, opening a salon in Stillwater (2004), followed by Woodbury (2006) and Hugo (2008). After five years of management, Lux chose to expand her ownership role by attending beauty school to becoming a licensed cosmetologist, graduating with honors. She now has what she considers “the ultimate job experience.”

How does Lux’s hair business compare to corporate life at 3M, where she worked in various levels in marketing and pharmaceuticals? “Well, there are some similarities: at 3M I had resources I could go to within the company, as I have with Fantastic Sam’s, and with both companies, I’ve met so many wonderful, supportive people,” she says. “I like that hairdressing is such a people business, where you can ... make [people] feel good. I think my mom was right; I should have gone into hairdressing years ago.”

Tell us a little about your life/career prior to opening your first Fantastic Sams.

I immigrated to the United States when I was only 17 years old. I had to work hard as a bus boy, waiter, and bartender to finance my education. I graduated from the University of California system at the top of my class with a PhD degree in World Politics. I landed a full time tenured faculty position at Riverside College the day I finished my PhD degree. In a short period of time I was elected as the youngest Chair of a multi discipline department.

I have been happily married to a lovely, double-specialist physician with a successful private practice in the City of Irvine.

I have three lovely children, ranging from 12 to 17 years old, the oldest of which is currently attending University of California, Irvine. I live with my family in the city of Newport Coast.

It was 12 years ago that I purchased my first Fantastic Sams, an existing location that was underperforming. Thanks to my life experiences and my education, I was able to turn that franchise around and currently that salon is the No. 3 salon in the southern California region. During the last two years I have purchased and built three more salons, including one state of the art salon in the City of Irvine.

Outside of owning four locations, I also train students for United Nations conferences and I travel around the world with my students participating in several Model United Nation Conferences every year.

Obviously having a background in economics providing the path for discovering franchising, but what most attracted you to the Fantastic Sams franchise opportunity?

Franchising provides entrepreneurs with the ability to remain independent while benefiting from the name recognition and expertise of a successful and well known franchise. From Wi-Fi to big flat screen televisions, owner Darcie Paradies successfully implemented her design concept into reality. No stranger to the industry she has worked in the salon industry for 20 years, 16 of them owning Fantastic Sam Salons, originally in Rice Lake and Black River Falls (which were later sold).

In 2001, she opened the Hudson location. Paradies currently owns three Fantastic Sams, opening a River Falls salon in 2005 and one in New Richmond in January. While she is no longer a stylist, she uses her skill in the industry and as a business coach. Her salons are in a growth pattern, especially the Hudson location.

Trish Harrington brought her 6-year-old daughter to a birthday party at Snip-its in North Attleborough and fell in love with the children’s hair salon. Wall Street Journal Story Highlights a New Breed of Franchisee

There was a very interesting story in The Wall Street Journal focusing on the next breed of entrepreneurs being targeted by franchisors. The story, “In With the New – As more boomers retire, franchisers set their sights on a much younger crowd”, is right in line with prospects we are attracted to.

Fantastic Sams supports franchising to the younger entrepreneur, to women, veterans and to minorities. Because our hair salon franchise concept is simple and accessible, it is not necessary to limit ownership. There’s a youth movement brewing in the franchising world.

Usually, franchisers don't want to gamble on young entrepreneurs—they prefer seasoned managers who have built up lots of savings to plow into the venture. Now a host of companies are rethinking that logic. They're aggressively recruiting twentysomethings through franchise brokers, marketing themselves in youth-friendly venues like Facebook, and in some cases offering financial lures to get young people on board—such as deep discounts on franchise fees, which many beginners can't afford.
